Information – Arts and Sciences – A Barony of the Kingdom of Atlantia

Hidden Mountain has a great many artisans who practice a wide variety of the arts and sciences of the middle ages. Our children also participate in many of these arts.

Our A & S meetings can be found on the baronial calendar.

Some of our artists:

Sir Hrothgar Ravensson, of the Canton of Moorhaven, enjoy a variety of different art forms within the SCA. Mainly he does wood-burning & scroll illumination. Lately he has been combining these two art forms. While challenging, it has been a lot of fun. He has a background in art starting at an early age. The society has really given him a place to practice different aspects of creating things. Photos provided by Sir Hrothgar and used with his permission.

Lord Pippin the Red, of the Canton of Misty Marsh is one of our versatile artists. when he isn’t fighting, or helping his three daughters learn to fight, he manages to find time to make lovely jewelry, and other items, such as his wax tablets. Photos by Lord Pippin the red, used with permission.

Lady Slaine inghean ni Seachnasaigh . I make coiled baskets out of pine needles. Coiled baskets are one of the oldest crafts, with evidence of their construction being found dating from Neanderthal times up until present day. Baskets were made across the world using similar methods out of locally available materials. Photos by Lady Slaine, used with permission.

Handmade beads and cross in a 12th century Byzantine style I had made based on surviving examples. I commissioned these artisans and assembled the paternoster with the silk cord and tassels.

Kidney pouch The prize I made for the bardic tourney at Manannan Mac Lir. It features the charges of John Emerys of Ellenar whom the tourney is in memory of, rendered all in sable. Period construction/materials for 21th C SCA.

Knife sheath Sheath based on surviving examples excavated from The Thames, London, dated late 12th century. Embossed leather, linen thread.

Bollock dagger and sheath for heavy combat Prize for Hidden Mountain Baronial Birthday tourney 2018. Carved rattan blade, oak scales forming the grip, bronze pommel cap, embossed leather sheath in the style of 14th century originals.

Shield constructed for heavy combat. This side shows a pad and the strap configuration based on 11th century artwork. Pad is quilted linen with flax tow stuffing. Straps are embossed leather.

Shield (front) Shield constructed for heavy combat. The shield is made of modern materials to approximate a 12th century design. Two layers of 1/4″ plywood, faced and backed with linen canvas, edged in rawhide, crimped nails affixing the edge, painted with linseed oil based paint with verte nicosa, ocher, and red iron oxide pigments.

Tent Tent hand sewn in the “Geteld” style. Based on artwork and a possible surviving fragmentary tent out of Sweden. Wool melton, hemp ropes, hickory ridge pole, maple uprights, linen thread, leather reinforcements.

Dagger handle and sheath Dagger handle replaced in the whittle tang style, matching 12th century artwork. Maple, linseed oil. Sheath in the style of surviving examples from The Thames, London, dated 12th century. Embossed leather, linen thread, braided linen cord.

Embroidered reliquary pouch Reliquary pouch based on German original. Linen field, silk embroidery and cord, pearl accents.

Mace Mace head from Tod’s stuff. Handle is carved hickory based on period border decorations in manuscripts. Grip is leather.

Knife sheath Based on surviving original from the Thames, London, with decoration based on period manuscript decoration. Embossed leather, linen stitching.

Spoon Hand carved spoon. Cyprus, linseed oil.
